Exemptions
Which vehicles will be exempt?
There are two types of exemption:
National exemptions are agreed by government and apply to all Clean Air Zones. These exemptions are automatic, which means you do not need to apply for them.
Local exemptions are agreed by councils for the Clean Air Zone in their area. These exemptions only apply in the specific Clean Air Zones where they have been agreed, which means there may be different local exemptions in other areas.
Some local exemptions may be permanent while others may be granted for a set period of time.
In order to be given a local exemption you will have to apply.
Information on which vehicles are covered by national and local exemptions as well as guidance on how to apply for a local exemption can be found at www.breathe-cleanair.com/exemptions
How long will exemptions last for?
Exemptions vary according to the type of vehicle. For example, emergency vehicles are permanently exempt while other vehicles, including those that are in the process of waiting to be replaced or retrofitted, may be granted a temporary exemption.
For details of other local exemptions and how long they last check out our local exemptions list.
