Clean Air Zone - Newsletter June 2022

National Clean Air Zone online vehicle checker available from today

From Tuesday 21 June, the Newcastle and Gateshead Clean Air Zone has been added to the government’s online vehicle checker.

This means that you can now check whether your vehicle will be charged to enter the zone, which will cover most of Newcastle city centre as well as routes across the Tyne, Swing, High Level and Redheugh bridges.

The map below shows the Clean Air Zone boundary.

To use the vehicle checker just go to www.gov.uk/clean-air-zones and enter your registration number.

Not all vehicles will be charged to enter the zone and it’s important to check to see whether you will be affected.

We're still in discussion with government regarding the launch date for the CAZ and will keep you updated on this.

Financial support and exemptions

If you are affected will be able to apply for financial support to help avoid daily charges by replacing or upgrading an older or non-compliant vehicle. You can find out more about vehicle upgrade grants at www.breathe-cleanair.com/grants.

The funding that will be available for vehicle upgrades is as follows:

  • Up to £3,700 for Hackney Carriage and private hire vehicles.

  • Up to £4,000 for wheelchair accessible taxi and private hire vehicles.

  • Up to £4,500 for vans and light goods vehicles.

  • Up to £16,000 for buses and coaches.

  • Up to £20,000 for heavy goods vehicles.

Some vehicles may also be exempt from having to pay CAZ charges. Further information about CAZ exemptions can be found at www.breathe-cleanair.com/exemptions.

We’ll send you further updates about these support measures and application processes as soon as these details are confirmed.

Which vehicles are affected

Remember that it is only taxis, vans, buses, coaches and HGVs that do not comply with the government’s CAZ emissions requirements that will be charged to enter the zone.

The Newcastle and Gateshead CAZ will not affect private cars or any vehicle that meets the national minimum emissions standards.

The table below sets out the minimum emissions standards and vehicle registration dates for taxis, vans, buses, coaches and HGVs.

If you are planning to replace a non-compliant vehicle, you are not required to purchase a brand new vehicle – just one that meets the standards set out below.
